1 Beaming
The process of putting warp yam on a beam. One of the most important operations in weaving, and yet one of the simplest. After spinning the yam, the spinner puts it on a beam when required for warps, and this is his last operation. Beams must be well made and tight. Very faulty cloth results if the yam does not come off the beam regularly. -
2 Scotch Beaming
This is a method of coloured warp preparation. Warps are prepared by the beam warper in the same way as for grey warps for slashing (tape sizing), the number of warp threads required being divided over a suitable number of back beams. These are then taken to a rebeaming machine, in which the threads are passed through a set of leasing healds and arranged in their proper order according to the pattern, and afterwards run on to the weaver's beam. When one beam has been filled a lease is taken by the healds and the yarn cut off and attached to another empty beam. -
3 Lappers
These are loose ends of warp threads that cling to the yarn on a section when they should be taken forward on to the beam, and thus every revolution wound from the sections adds one revolution to the lapper, and if this is not cut off in reasonable time it makes an opening in the warp and consequently a soft place on the beam, or it may pick up other threads and cause serious breakages. The loose ends which cause the lappers may be threads that have run out in the warping, or broken during the beaming. -
4 Back Beams
The beams prepared by the beaming frame to be used in the creel of the slasher sizing machine. Each beam will have about 500 threads, and from three or four to six or more will be used to make a weaver's beam. The length of yarn on a beam varies from 10,000 to 25,000 yards, according to the counts of yarn (see Slasher Sizing Machine) -
